Abercrombie & Kent: Tailor Made Argentina & Chile: Journey to Patagonia
Day 1 Buenos Aires, Argentina
Arrive in Buenos Aires, Argentina’s cosmopolitan capital, where you are met and transferred to your luxurious hotel. Known as the “Paris of South America,” elegant Buenos Aires is a fascinating city with a European flair. Explore it on your own this afternoon and evening.
Join your guide to view key city landmarks, such as the Casa Rosada, Cabildo, Metropolitan Cathedral and Plaza de Mayo. Visit the Recoleta Cemetery where the elite of Buenos Aires have been laid to rest, including Eva Perón, Argentina’s beloved and controversial First Lady. This afternoon, fly to Ushuaia, the southernmost city in the world, set in magnificent Tierra del Fuego, at the remote tip of South America. Check in to your hotel, which serves as a starting point for the trails that run through Reserva Natural Cerro Alarkén, an area devoted to the preservation of native forests.
Drive to Estancia Harberton, the oldest estancia (farm) in Tierra del Fuego and an Argentine National Historical Monument. The farm, a working nature reserve, has been in the same family for six generations. Next, sail to Isla Martillo to walk among the penguins nestled in their rookery. The island hosts a colony of 3,000 pairs of Magellanic penguins, 16 pairs of gentoo penguins and 155 pairs of rock cormorants. Continue sailing to Gable Island, a remote primal landscape set in the middle of the Beagle Channel. Enjoy a rustic lunch before sailing back to Harberton. Return to your hotel for an evening at leisure.
This morning, fly to El Calafate to experience Patagonian rural life in this rustic, charming town with well-kept gardens that is set before a stunning Patagonian backdrop and serves as gateway to a majestic world of glaciers.
Today, visit the Perito Moreno Glacier, one of the few remaining advancing glaciers in the world. View the glacier from several vantage points, walking along seven “balconies” located at different heights and at distances from the glacier.
After an early breakfast, journey across the Chilean border to Puerto Natales, located at the edge of Chilean Patagonia. Check in to your hotel just outside of town, where you have lunch. Enjoy the rest of your afternoon at leisure. This afternoon is the beginning of two full days of exploration in spectacular Patagonia, led by your expert local guides. Choose from a wide range of expeditions and activities in Torres del Paine National Park, such as horseback riding, trekking, kayaking, mountain biking and birding — all designed to reveal Patagonia at its most authentic. Mingle with the local residents to learn their customs, visiting ranches and businesses where the region’s pioneers worked, sailing fjords and admiring landscapes far off the beaten path.
Today, enjoy time at leisure or explore the magnificent wilderness area of Torres del Paine National Park. You may encounter herds of guanaco roaming free, while flamingos and other birds populate lakes, streams and meadows. A UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the park is renowned for its otherworldly landscape of granite spires, ice and deserted pampas. Watch closely as you scan the serrated peaks and you might pick out a soaring Andean condor riding an updraft, its ten-foot wingspan outspread. Tonight, after dinner, simply unwind in your room after your day of adventure, or, if the sky is clear, step outside for some impromptu stargazing, marveling at the ink-black Patagonian night sky awash with countless pinpoints of starlight.
Spend your last day here at leisure or choose from a wide range of optional expeditions with different grades of difficulty and duration, exploring fjords, mountains, glaciers, Patagonian forests or farms. You may go horseback riding, trekking, kayaking or mountain biking as well.
After a leisurely morning, drive to Punta Arenas for the flight to Santiago, capital of Chile, a vibrant city set against the backdrop of the marvelous Andes. Upon arrival, you are met and transferred to your elegant hotel strategically located in the capital's most prestigious and refined neighborhood, El Golf. Enjoy your evening at leisure.
This morning, explore Santiago beginning with a drive through the main business district of Providencia en route to the city center. See ‘La Moneda,’ the Presidential Palace — the seat of power and the city’s civic center — and continue to Plaza de Armas, the main square to see Santiago’s Cathedral, the religious and spiritual heart of the city. Ride a funicular up San Cristobal Hill to view the stunning statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary and take in expansive views over Santiago. Return to the hotel and relax with special late access of your room. Later, transfer to the airport for your departing flight.
